March 25th, 2025 | 4 minute read

In my latest update, I have included reference to:
Term dates
Deputy Headteacher appointment
Eid

Before I make reference to these issues, however, I would like to update all parents and carers on what has been an incredible term for LCS, with regard to achievements of the school and of individual students. Below is a summary of just some of the achievements of our school and our students, in recent weeks.

LCS was very pleased to recently receive the Silver Embedded School Award, from Isaac Physics. Isaac Physics is used widely in our Science department, by Physics teachers as well as Chemistry and Biology, and is used across all key stages. We are now hopeful to also achieve the Gold Award, in due course.

7 students from LCS recently competed in the Derbyshire team at the National Cross-Country Championships. Olivia Lee (Year 9) finished 3rd and earned herself an England vest, repeating the success of former LCS student Hugo Milner, back in 2013. Olivia proudly represented England in the Home Counties International Schools Cross Country Championships in Scotland, last weekend.

Eva Jaison (Year 11) has recently earned a prestigious Arkwright Scholarship award. The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship was established nationally to identify, inspire and nurture future brilliant Engineers. Since it was established in 1991, over 8000 scholars have been chosen, for what is the most prestigious scholarship of its type, in the country.

During the recent Derbyshire City and County Youth Orchestra courses, LCS had 8 students in both orchestras. Even more students will be involved at the Derby Music Centre concert, on 29th March.

LCS teams have been successful in Netball this term , with our Year 8 team reaching the final of the County Netball Tournament.

Our Under 15 team also finished in 3rd place in the recent Derbyshire County Netball Tournament.

On Friday 7th March, our Key Stage 4 girls team represented Derbyshire in the Regional Badminton finals at Nottingham Trent University. Our LCS team will now compete at the National School Finals on Saturday 29th March, at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes.

We are always proud of the achievements of our school and our students, but with so many amazing things happening this term, I wanted to celebrate them all with you.

Term dates

Spring Term finishes on Friday 4th April. There is no early finish on the last day of this term, so students will leave school at the usual time of 3pm.

A reminder to all parents and carers that Summer Term begins on Tuesday 22nd April, due to Monday 21st April being a national Bank Holiday.

For all school term dates, please refer to our website, at www.littleover.derby.sch.uk/parents/dates-events/term-dates

Eid

An email was sent to all parents/carers on Monday 24th March, including a link to a form for parents/carers to request 1 day of authorised absence for their child(ren) for Eid.

This form must be completed for any absence to be authorised and, as the form and email explain, only 1 day of absence will be authorised.

I would like to wish Eid Mubarak to all our students and families celebrating Eid next week.

Deputy Headteacher post

Parents/carers may have noticed a recent advertisement for a Deputy Headteacher vacancy, at LCS.

This vacancy is as a result of Mr McElhone’s decision to leave the school at the end of this academic year, after many years of service. Mr McElhone made the decision to leave us some time ago and informed me, as well as the candidates for the Headteacher post, of his situation before this appointment was made.

The process to recruit a new Deputy Headteacher is well under way, and we will be interviewing for this post on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th March.

Thank you, as always for your support of our school, our students and our staff.

I am not anticipating sending another update this term, unless there is urgent need to do so. I would, therefore, like to wish you all a Happy Easter and Happy Holidays.

I look forward to updating you further at the start of the Summer Term, which will be my last at LCS.

Keep safe.
J Wilding
